Top 8 Flower Care Tips to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer
Discover 8 expert flower care tips to keep your bouquet fresh and vibrant for days. Simple tricks that work for roses, lilies, tulips, and more.
Fresh flowers are a beautiful gift, but without proper care, they can wilt too quickly. Whether you've received a surprise bouquet or ordered flowers for yourself, here are 8 proven flower care tips to make your bouquet last longer—perfect for Singapore’s warm, humid climate.
1. Trim the Stems Right Away
Use clean, sharp scissors or garden shears to cut 1–2cm off the stems at a 45° angle. This increases surface area for water absorption.
2. Use a Clean Vase
Bacteria in dirty vases can shorten your flowers’ lifespan. Wash with soap and warm water, then rinse thoroughly before adding water.
3. Add the Flower Food
Most bouquets come with a sachet of flower food—don’t skip it! It contains sugar (for nutrition), citric acid (to balance pH), and bleach (to kill bacteria).
No flower food? Mix 1 tsp sugar + 1 tsp vinegar + a few drops of bleach in 1L of water.
4. Change the Water Every 2 Days
Fresh water = fresh flowers. Replace the vase water every 2–3 days and re-trim stems to prevent bacteria buildup.
5. Keep Them Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight
Place your bouquet in a cool, shaded spot—away from direct sunlight, heaters, and air-con vents. High heat speeds up wilting.
6. Keep Flowers Away from Fruits
Fruits like bananas and apples release ethylene gas, which accelerates flower aging. Keep them far apart!
7. Remove Wilting or Dead Blooms
Dying petals release bacteria into the water. Remove any wilted flowers or leaves immediately to protect the rest of the bouquet.
8. Mist the Flowers Daily
Lightly spritz the petals with clean water, especially if you're in an air-conditioned room. This adds humidity and keeps blooms from drying out.
